Wonderful insights, Randy!! Perfect analogy w/Ministry of Silly Walks. In all seriousness, however, you might want to see how some of these compare with each other and how well they predict anything meaningful about skills. Check out my article, "Beyond PM Certification: Achieving PM Performance Improvement" -- http://michaelgreer.biz/?p=580

Thanks so much for your thoughtful and passionate input!

Ah, "certification freaks" - the "Ministry of Silly Walks" (via Monty Python) of Project Management or any other portion of a complete professional life. The (very profitable to the certifiers) alphabet soup after your name to claim a special cachet as a marketing ploy, often doing what a professional is supposed to be knowng/doing anyway. We can all get 10 friends, call ourselves Founding Fellows, and start our own!

Since this article was originally published, I've learned of another set of PM competencies that are "open source" and under construction. Check out the Global Alliance for Project Performance Standards (GAPPS) - “a volunteer organisation that provides a forum for stakeholders from differing systems, backgrounds, and operating contexts to work together to create performance based frameworks and standards that address the needs of the global project management community.” [URL: http://www.globalpmstandards.org/ ]
And see also their "GAPPS Project Manager Standards – Free, open-source, competency-based standards for PM “… standards that: * Have global application throughout the program and project management community; * are independent of any proprietary standards; and, * … support globally recognised and transferable qualifications.” [URL: http://www.globalpmstandards.org/index.php/project-manager-standards/download-latest-update.html ]
